How do web servers communicate with databases?
If security is such a big deal on webs, why doesn't this FAQ talk more about it?

API stands for Application Programming Interface, a protocol for accessing directly the internal functions of a vendor application. The three APIs in question grant high-performance access to three popular web servers:

  • ISAPI - Microsoft's API for IIS. Complete reference (long). Compared with CGI (requires registration).
  • NSAPI - Netscape's API for Enterprise Server. See also "Writing Server-Side JavaScript Applications."
  • WSAPI - O'Reilly & Associates' API for WebSite Professional. In addition, WebSite supports iHTML, an HTML extension framework featuring database connectivity, dynamic image generation, and event scheduling.
Note: Each of these is a proprietary interface specification for writing compiled code that executes faster and more efficiently on the target web server than would an equivalent CGI script.
Although API code is by definition non-portable, it is possible to use the API to create an optimized interface for portable code. For example, the Win32 port of Perl uses ISAPI to run the Perl interpreter directly against IIS.
